The Sons of the American Revolution is the leading national male lineage society that perpetuates the ideals of the war for independence. As a historical, educational, and patriotic, non-profit corporation organized under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, we seek to maintain and expand the meaning of patriotism, respect for our national symbols, the value of American citizenship, and the unifying force of “e pluribus unum” that was created from the people of many nations — one nation and one people.
SAR seeks to maintain and extend:
We do this by perpetuating the stories of patriotism, courage, sacrifice, tragedy, and triumph of the men who achieved the independence of the American people in the belief that these stories are universal ones of man’s eternal struggle against tyranny, relevant to all time, and will inspire and strengthen each succeeding generation as it too is called upon to defend our freedoms on the battlefield and in our public institutions.
The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) honors our Revolutionary War patriot ancestors by promoting patriotism, serving our communities and educating and inspiring future generations about the founding principles of our Country.
The Sons of the American Revolution was incorporated in Connecticut on January 17, 1890 and later chartered by the United States Congress on June 6, 1906. Prior to 1890 a number of state societies were formed. These were led by the Sons of Revolutionary Sires, which was organized July 4, 1876 in San Francisco, California. Acting on a resolution by the New Jersey Society, delegates from thirteen state societies met at Fraunces Tavern in New York City on April 30, 1889 in celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of the inauguration of George Washington. It was on this date that the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution was organized.
OUR PURPOSE
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution was organized on April 30, 1889, to “perpetuate the memory of those who, by their services or sacrifices during the war of the American Revolution, achieved the independence of the American People.”
WHAT DOES SAR DO?
Nationally, we decorate the graves of Revolutionary War soldiers and patriots. We support excellence in teaching of American history. We participate in patriotic observances. We support research and preservation of historic material relating to the men and women who fought or gave service for Independence in the American Revolutionary War.
Each of the fifty states are represented as well as the District of Columbia. There are also international societies in Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, Switzerland, the United Kingdom just to name a few.
THE ALASKA STATE SOCIETY
In Alaska, the State Society is small, less than 70 members spread out across the state, and many of them living outside Alaska, making it difficult to have individual chapters. For the last ten years, we have concentrated our efforts where we think will make the most impact with what few resources we have.
An annual essay contest for Alaska High School seniors centering on the topic of the Revolutionary War. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners receive scholarship funds towards their college education. In 2023, Our 1st place winner went on to District to take 1st place there, and then on to national, winning 1st place in the country.
We also provided certificates and medals annually for outstanding JROTC cadets around the state from North Pole to Anchorage and many High Schools in-between. Alaska SAR officers make efforts to present the certificates and medals in person when possible to the cadets at the annual award ceremonies.
The Alaska Society has participated in the Independence Day parades in Anchorage and Chugiak wearing American Revolutionary War uniforms representing SAR.
As our ranks grow, we hope to engage in additional efforts around the state to support the SAR’s goals and mission.
Mark your calendars for our 2026 Annual Meeting!
